Investigations are ongoing after a teacher was found dead in an apparent suicide in Kirinyaga County. Mwea-East Police Commander Patrick Nyaanga reported that the body of 51-year-old Danson Kariuki was discovered in Mirera village. Kariuki was a teacher at Urumandi Primary School in Murinduko Ward.

“My officers found the teacher hanging from a tree after being notified by local residents,” Nyaanga stated.

Residents of Kirinyaga are increasingly concerned about the rising number of suicide cases in the area. Local leaders, including Kirinyaga Counselor Chairman Kamau Muchira, have pointed to various factors such as substance abuse, social issues, and stress as contributors to the crisis, particularly affecting men and youth.

“The primary school teacher’s death, under unclear circumstances, has left the community, students, and fellow educators in shock,” Muchira commented. Counselors in the region stress that such tragedies might be prevented with adequate support services.

The body has been taken to a nearby mortuary.
