Police in Kirinyaga have arrested a man accused of multiple vehicle theft in the region.
The man was arrested at Mwea rice farm in Thiba on Saturday morning.
There was drama at the rice farm as the suspect was being arrested by detectives from Kiamaciri police station after two vehicles he had stolen were recovered.
Two other suspects escaped as angry residents bayed for the nabbed man’s blood.
According to Mwea West sub-county police commander Mbatian Kantai, one of the vehicles was stolen from Kangaita village in KIrinyaga Central Constituency, while the other one was stolen at Kiangai village in Ndia before they were recovered at Thiba unit 6 rice farm.
“My officers from Thiba police station have managed to arrest one of the suspects, but two suspects have escaped. we are looking for them,” Kantai said.
Benson Muriithi, whose Toyota Probox was stolen at Kangaita village said his vehicle had a tracker. “I woke up only to find my vehicle missing and that’s when I used the tracker which led me to Mwea rice farm and I reported the matter at Thiba police station with my friends where we met three suspects with two vehicles,” Muriithi said.
Solomon Muhoro, whose Toyota Probox was stolen at Kiangai village, said he was shocked to find his vehicle missing. “I started praying with my family before reporting the matter to the police station, but after a few minutes, I was called by somebody telling me my vehicle was in Mwea rice farm. My colleague from Kangaita helped me as his vehicle had a tracker,” Muhoro said.
There has been anoutcry among Kirinyaga residents over an increase in vehicle theft in the region.
“We are urging police in Kirinyaga county to increase patrols as we suspect the suspects had planned to sell the two vehicles before he was arrested. It is a big syndicate,” Titus Mbogo and Nicholas Maina, from Kangaita village said.
Mwea West police commander Mbatian Kantai said the suspect is being held at Kiamaciri police station as two suspects are being sought by the detectives. “The two vehicles are in Kiamaciri police station as investigations continue,” Kantai said.
