Learning at Kiamwasi Technical Training Institute in Kitutu Chache South, Kisii County, has been paralyzed for four days after a contractor shut down the school over unpaid bills.
As a result, students were forced to sit their exams outdoors, while teaching staff remain locked out of essential teaching materials.
For the 300 students enrolled at the institute, the situation paints a bleak future. The contractor, who was responsible for building the school’s infrastructure, took drastic action after the government failed to settle his dues.
A spot check by Citizen TV revealed a dire situation. Hundreds of students were stranded, forced to attend classes on the pavements, unsure of their academic future as the dispute between the contractor and the Ministry of Education escalated.
“I came here to study. I have paid my school fees, but teaching materials have been locked up in the staffroom. That’s where our teachers get resources to teach us. Where do they expect us to learn?” said Onesmus Motallo, a student at the institute.
“We are stranded because of the contractor. Even our exams are being taken in open spaces. We now have to share toilets with teachers.” Joshua Bosire, another student added.
One of the locked rooms holds crucial teaching materials, making it impossible for staff to effectively teach.
The contractor remained firm, insisting that access to the building will only be restored once his outstanding payments are settled in full.
Kiamwasi Technical Training Institute, a branch of Kisii National Polytechnic, was established in 2018.
