Kisii MPs threaten to resist impeachment and chastise the executive

Two Members of Parliament from Kisii County have declared their opposition to the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Kitutu Chache South MP Anthony Kibagendi and Kisii County Senator Richard Onyonka argue that, if anything, it is President William Ruto who should face impeachment instead.

According to the two leaders, the ongoing economic and political crises in the country are primarily the result of President Ruto’s leadership. They accuse him of trying to deflect blame onto his deputy by supporting an impeachment motion against Gachagua.

“Ruto should know that he has become unpopular with Kenyans because of his corrupt and autocratic leadership. If you compare the two, I would go for Gachagua—you cannot blame him for any of the shortcomings facing the country,” Kibagendi stated.

Speaking to *People Daily*, Senator Onyonka remarked, “The move to impeach Gachagua is null and void. Impeaching the DP is not a solution to the problems facing the country. William Ruto and Raila must sit down with Gachagua and agree on the way forward over the current problems which have engulfed our country.”

Onyonka further highlighted that there are far more pressing issues, such as rampant corruption, which legislators should focus on instead of engaging in what he described as “petty politics of impeachment.” He criticized the government’s handling of taxes, saying that under Ruto’s leadership, Kenyans have suffered from punitive taxation without receiving adequate services in return.

Kibagendi echoed these sentiments, stating that before MPs consider impeaching Gachagua, they should first impeach Ruto, whom he holds responsible for many of the country’s challenges, including corruption and tribalism. “If there is a person perpetuating tribalism in the country, it is President Ruto. Look at the key appointments he has made in his government since he came to power,” he asserted.
