Residents of Kitutu Chache North constituency in Kisii County are experiencing dark nights due to continued vandalism of electricity equipment.
The latest incident happened in Onywere area in Marani sub-county, where a transformer was vandalised, leaving area residents in the dark.
Angry residents who talked to local media Bosongo Vibes said the signs were in the air when electricity disconnection started happening every evening for the past one week.
Alloys Angwenyi, whose home is near Gesabakwa Primary School, said he has not been able to operate normally since the transformer was vandalised.
“For the last one week these people have been disconnecting power to our homes at around 7pm. They were consistent to dupe us. Then they struck and vandalised the transformer,” Angwenyi said.
A resident who suspected the crime alerted Angwenyi, who mobilised other residents and went after the vandals.
The vandals escaped, leaving behind the vandalised transformer which had already been lowered.
“So far over 13 transformers have been vandalised within Kitutu Chache North constituency. We want to request our MP Japheth Nyakundi to intervene and end this menace,” Angwenyi added.
The residents claim the vandalism could be an inside job within electricity supplier Kenya Power, as not many people have the expertise to disconnect and dismantle the transformers.
Apart from the transformers, electricity cables are also a hotcake for the vandals.
In Nyamariba area still within Marani sub-county, many homesteads are without electricity after the vandals stole cables.
“We are used to having power in our homes, but these vandals are wrecking havoc in our area. We want stern action to be taken to curb this vice,” Angwenyi asked further.
