A historic ceremony unfolded in Misuuni, Ngiini Village in Kitui in November 2026, as Dr Augustus Kyalo Muli was officially crowned Chief Kyalo Muli I, marking the revival of the Anzauni Chiefdom more than seven decades after it was last active.

The colourful event took place beneath a red and cream ceremonial tent canopy, with traditional dancers and community dignitaries in attendance.

Akamba elders presided over the proceedings, lending the occasion deep cultural weight as hundreds of guests gathered to witness the moment.

Anzauni Chiefdom restored after over 70 years

The Anzauni Chiefdom had been dormant for over 70 years before the ceremony breathed new life into this piece of Kamba heritage.

The gathering attracted community members not only from across Kenya but also from Tanzania, underlining the significance of the occasion to the wider Kamba diaspora.

The event was a blend of solemnity and celebration, with traditional performances setting the tone for what organisers and attendees described as a landmark moment in the community’s cultural history.

Kyalo Muli eyes Kamba unity ahead of 2027 vote

Beyond the cultural significance, Chief Kyalo Muli I also used his platform to make a direct political appeal.

As the leader of the National Liberal Party, he called on the Kamba community’s estimated two million registered voters to present a unified front in the 2027 general elections, urging them to speak with one voice on matters affecting their interests.

The newly crowned chief framed the revival of the chiefdom as part of a broader effort to strengthen community identity and solidarity, with the upcoming election cycle serving as an immediate test of that cohesion.
