Athletics Kenya (AK) is filled with optimism as the country’s Under-20 team prepares to depart today for the World Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru, set to take place from August 27 to 31, 2024. Barnabas Korir, the head of youth development at AK, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to perform well on the international stage.
Korir emphasized that the team’s rigorous preparation and the impressive talent among the 19 athletes are significant factors fueling their confidence.
“Our athletes have undergone intensive training and have shown exceptional dedication. We have a blend of experienced runners and promising newcomers who have the potential to bring home medals,” Korir stated
In the 2022 World Athletics Championships held in Cali, Colombia, the Under-20 team finished fourth, securing 3 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals. They trailed behind the USA, Jamaica, and Ethiopia, who won 7, 6, and 6 gold medals, respectively.
This year, Kenya will face tough competition from traditional athletics powerhouses such as the United States, Jamaica, and Ethiopia. Despite this, Barnabas Korir, head of youth development at AK, emphasized that the focus has been on thoroughly preparing the athletes both mentally and physically for the challenge.
With Kenya’s strong legacy in middle and long-distance running, the U-20 team is expected to continue this tradition. Korir also noted that several athletes in the current squad are already making significant impacts in both local and international competitions, which is promising for their performance in Lima.
“As a federation, we are committed to nurturing young talent and providing them with the necessary support to excel. The World Athletics U20 Championships is a crucial platform for these athletes to showcase their skills and gain invaluable experience,” Korir added.
The team will be led by Africa 800m champion Sarah Moraa and African silver medallist Edmond Serem.
