Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has announced the full resumption of its prepaid token service.

In a statement on Tuesday, KPLC said a technical glitch that affected the delivery of the prepaid token was resolved on Monday.

“Following a recent system malfunction that resulted in delays in the processing and delivery of prepaid tokens, we are pleased to inform our customers that the issue was resolved yesterday (Monday 12 February 2024), enabling our customers to conveniently purchase their tokens through M-Pesa Paybill No. 888880,” the statement read in part.

Safaricom had earlier absolved itself from the familiar and squarely put the blame on Kenya Power for the delay in the purchase of tokens.

The telco in a clarification on their official X platform exonerated itself from blame saying it was the utility firm’s duty to generate tokens, not them.

“Kindly note, that the token is generated by KPLC. They are having delays with token production, kindly allow them time to resolve the issue and send the token,” Safaricom said.

The power company on Saturday afternoon announced that it was experiencing a technical hitch affecting customers on both prepaid and postpaid bill payment systems.

Despite announcing the resumption of the electricity token purchase services on Saturday evening, Kenyans took to social media to express their frustration.

The frustrated customers camped on KPLC’s social media pages decrying the lack of service even on assurance that the system was back and running.
