Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Secretary General Akelo Misori clarified that the decision to call off the teachers’ strike on Monday was not his personal choice, but a collective decision by the union. Misori, who faced accusations of betrayal from some KUPPET executive members, criticized them as hypocritical.

He explained that the strike was called off by the executive council after extensive consultations with union members and following an agreement with the Teachers Service Commission to meet their demands.

“The mandate we executed was not the mandate of Akelo, Akelo speaks on behalf of the executive board,” said Misori.

KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori explained that the county executive members, who are part of the National Governing Council, had given the executive board the authority to negotiate with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and finalize a return-to-work agreement during their last meeting. Misori expressed surprise that some of the KUPPET members, who had granted this authority, are now criticizing the board for ending the strike.

He emphasized that the union leadership had successfully reached an agreement with the TSC on several issues that had initially prompted the strike. Misori urged teachers to remain steadfast, assuring them that the union will continue to pursue their demands until they are fully met.
