On Monday, May 6, 2024, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) declared the closure of UN Avenue in Runda due to increased water levels on the road caused by heavy rainfall in Nairobi. The affected sections are between the Ruaka Road roundabout and Magnolia Close.

“The Kenya Urban Roads Authority regrets to inform the public that UN-Avenue, Runda has been closed due to the rising water  levels on the road following the heavy downpour experienced last night,” KURA noted in a statement.

Additionally, KURA stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates on the progress.

The urban roads authority also advised motorists to use alternative routes and exercise caution due to flooding affecting various roads in the city. The closure of UN Avenue follows KURA’s announcement of the temporary closure of Enterprise Road, Eastern Bypass, and Thika Bypass on May 1, 2024, due to floods and heavy rains in Nairobi.

This action came after KURA issued a public warning about certain roads in Nairobi and Kiambu that have been declared partially impassable. In a public notice, KURA explained that the roads in the two counties have been affected by floods caused by the ongoing heavy rains in the country.

“Following the heavy rains experienced last night across the country, the following roads within  Nairobi and Kiambu Counties have been heavily affected leading to partial closure,” KURA said.
