Residents of Karosi village in Kuria West subcounty are mourning the death of a man who was buried alive under the rubble of a mine. The victim reportedly entered the mine without informing anyone, despite operations being suspended due to heavy rains.
Babere Chacha, a mine worker, noted that accidents have been common at the site, and with the added risk posed by the rains, activities had been halted. “We have been experiencing problems, and even when entering the site, we have to go in as a group for safety,” said Daniel Wangwi, another mine worker. He recalled another incident several months ago when a worker was buried alive in the Muongezeko area, located four kilometers from the Karosi mining site.
In response to this tragedy, locals are now calling for stricter regulations on mining activities to prevent further deaths and injuries.
