Kwale County Governor Fatuma Achani has begun the distribution of 45 tonnes of certified seeds to farmers in all 20 wards of the county.

The initiative, which includes essential seeds such as maize, rice, green grams, and cowpeas, coincides with the upcoming rainy season and is part of the county’s ongoing efforts to improve food security and livelihood opportunities.

This seed distribution is a collaboration between the Kwale County Government and the Financing Locally Led Climate Action (FLLOCA) program, which aims to increase climate resilience among local farmers.

Over the last two years, Kwale County has distributed more than 20,000 tonnes of certified maize, cowpeas, rice, and green grams, as well as over 26,000 fruit seedlings throughout the region.

Governor Achani spoke at the County Headquarters in Tsimba Golini Ward, Matuga Sub-County, urging farmers to make good use of the seeds in order to increase crop yields and food production.

Additionally, the county government has promoted irrigation farming in the arid areas of Kinango and Lungalunga Sub-Counties by building and operating 20 dams.

Mwakalanga and Umoja in Lungalunga, Bekadzo, Kizingo, and Dzihoheni in Kinango, and Shauri Moyo in Samburu Sub-County are examples of important agricultural dams.

“We are committed to supporting our farmers and ensuring that agriculture remains a cornerstone of economic growth in Kwale. These seeds are not just a donation—they are a crucial resource to help increase harvests and secure food for your families,” said Governor Achani.

Roman Shera, a County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to agricultural support.

He announced plans to deploy agricultural officers to train farmers on best planting practices.

“We have laid out sufficient strategies to support agriculture, and we will send agricultural officers to provide additional training on effective planting techniques,” said Shera.

Mercy Chaliko, a farmer from Tsimba Golini Ward in Matuga Constituency, expressed her gratitude for the seed distribution, emphasizing its impact on lowering seed costs and increasing agricultural productivity.

“We truly appreciate this initiative as it has significantly cut the cost of acquiring seeds. These seeds will go a long way in enhancing our farming efforts,” said Chaliko.
