A group of pastoralists in Laikipia has adopted new cooking methods to conserve the environment and reduce reliance on traditional firewood-based practices. This shift comes as environmentalists continue to raise concerns about the depletion of forest cover.
The locals have started using modern stoves that require less wood, which not only helps preserve the environment but also reduces health risks. “There has been a rise in health issues, such as eye diseases, especially among mothers who use traditional cooking methods that produce excessive smoke,” said Koinange Wahome, Laikipia County’s Treasury Chief.
The stoves were provided by a Dutch organization. Rosemary Nenini, a local resident, remarked, “As an older woman, it has been challenging to gather firewood, and it has affected my health. With these modern stoves, I believe my health will improve.”
Another resident, Naiserian Lemayain, added, “We understand the importance of environmental conservation, and by using these new stoves, we are pleased to contribute to that effort.”
