Known for their unconventional approach to various aspects of life, from dress codes to values, Gen Z has made a significant impact. While their methods have been questioned, particularly in the workplace—where they diverge from practices of previous generations like Gen X and Boomers, preferring flexibility and meaningful work over long-term job loyalty—they embrace a ‘do you’ ethos.
For many Gen Z individuals, simply having a job and a salary isn’t enough; they seek meaning in their work. This often leads them to switch employers frequently, sometimes after only a few months.
They also disregard traditional dress norms, opting for comfort and personal expression. Jeans, crop tops, and even crocs or sneakers are common choices, reflecting their belief that talent outweighs attire.
In recent protests against the Finance Bill 2024 across the country, Gen Z has been prominently visible. They’ve been seen in sneakers, black crop tops, cargo pants, and other trendy outfits, actively exercising their democratic rights.
However, ahead of these protests, there have been advisories against wearing attire like crocs, tank tops, or anything that exposes the body, due to safety concerns, especially regarding teargas.
As today’s protests approach, participants, including Gen Z and others, have been urged to dress appropriately to mitigate potential risks.
“Please dress appropriately. Cover yourself up. I know it’s baddie season, crop tops and shorts… but cover yourself as much as you can. Remember teargas goes for moist surfaces. You’re going to be sweating so as long as it lands on your skin, it’s going to irritate your skin,” Dr Hope, a medical doctor, said during an X Space titled ‘Dos and Don’ts during protests’ organised by Eric Muriu, an advocate of the High Court.
Hope advised protesters to refrain from wearing open shoes and crocs, and instead opt for sneakers, which are functional and comfortable, or boots.
On jewelry, protesters were advised to wear the most dainty pieces if necessary.
“Avoid wearing loops or jewellery that can put you at risk of someone grabbing it or it getting attached to something” she said.
“Avoid wearing makeup because once the teargas gets to your face, you’ll have to wash it and it will irritate your eyes more.”
She further recommended the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including N95 masks or basic masks. Protesters were also reminded to maintain situational awareness and to be mindful of their behavior and surroundings.
Today’s protests occur against a backdrop of heightened tension following a string of abductions targeting online influencers critical of the Finance Bill.
