Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has reaffirmed his stand on the Finance Bill 2023, especially concerning the housing levy.

Ledama reiterated that the proposed mandatory housing levy is a scandal waiting to happen.

He was reacting to remarks by President William Ruto and Defence CS Aden Duale earlier on Sunday during an event in Narok County.

Speaking during the thanksgiving service of Environment CS Soipan Tuya, Ruto proposed an open voting system for the Bill to know which MPs would vote against it when it comes to the floor of the House on Thursday.

“I want to see the MPs who will vote against the plan to give these young people employment and a chance to own a decent home with a five per cent mortgage when you as a leader getting a mortgage because of the taxes paid by the people of Kenya, of three per cent,” he said.

CS Duale also termed as dishonest and selfish, elected leaders who were opposing the levy.

He revealed that members of the Cabinet and all leaders in the National Assembly and Senate get Sh30 million as mortgage.

“We have to tell Kenyans the truth. All MPs receive Sh30 million as a mortgage. Why are they now opposing the affordable housing project?”  he asked.

But Ledama asked the President to have the Parliamentary Service Commission remove that particular benefit.

“My position remains the housing levy is a scandal in waiting,” he said.

He added that the mortgage to elected leaders was only for the interested and not mandatory to all.

The three per cent continues to be a hot topic even as the budget release date looms.

The budget will be read on June 15.
