A 17-year-old Form Three student, Emanuel Otieno, tragically died after being struck by lightning in Anduro village, located within the Nyandiwa sub-location of Alego-Usonga sub-county. Emanuel was a student at Ambira Boys’ High School.

According to Joseph Otieno Aloo, the Assistant Chief of Nyandiwa sub-location, Emanuel had been sent home for school fees and attended a church service with his cousins on Sunday until around 4 PM. After the service, he took his father’s motorbike to drop his relatives off in Siaya town.

Emanuel was only 400 meters away when lightning struck. His cousins, who were with him, managed to escape unharmed and raised the alarm. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The assistant chief described the incident as “mysterious” because it was not raining at the time. The boy’s body has been taken to a private hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
