Former Machakos County First Lady Lilian Ng’ang’a has raised concerns about a decline in basic writing skills among Generation Z.
In a statement shared on her Instagram stories, Lilian said she has noticed that many young people today struggle with simple writing.
Lilian said she would be willing to host a session with Gen Z teachers to better understand the issue. She noted that she would like educators to explain why many young people appear to have difficulties with basic writing skills.
“I would be happy to host a session with Gen Z teachers so they can expound on why this generation struggles with basic writing. Real concern,” she said.

Shopping receipts
This comes months after she criticised the growing trend of people posting their shopping receipts online, saying it reflects insecurity rather than success.
Lillian said lifestyle content is fine, but sharing shopping lists and receipts adds no value and instead shows personal shallowness.
In a statement on October 13, 2025, the former Machakos County First Lady questioned why anyone would feel the need to prove they shop, noting that everyone does it in their own way.
“Lifestyle content is fine. If, however, you feel you have to post shopping list receipts, there’s something amiss with you as a person. Everyone shops in bits or in bulk. What are you so insecure about? I call this ushamba-max!” she said.

Her remarks appeared to target social media users and influencers who post their shopping sprees along with receipts showing how much they spent.
Lillian suggested that such behaviour is driven by the need for validation rather than genuine joy. She maintained that while there is nothing wrong with enjoying life, constantly displaying spending habits online reflects misplaced priorities.
By calling it “ushamba-max,” she stressed that people do not need to prove their worth or wealth online and should instead focus on living genuinely.
