The government has extended humanitarian aid to the families of the victims and survivors of the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire tragedy. The devastating fire, which broke out at 11 p.m. on Thursday, claimed the lives of 21 pupils.
Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura reported that 19 bodies were recovered from the scene, with two additional pupils succumbing to their injuries in the hospital. He acknowledged the immense suffering experienced by the affected families.
“In response to this situation, the government has provided humanitarian assistance to support the victims and their families. The aid will be distributed to the affected individuals and families to help meet their immediate needs,” Mwaura stated.
The donated items include 100 bags of rice (50 kg each), 50 bags of beans (50 kg each), 20 bags of corn-soya blend (24 kg each), and 200 blankets. Other supplies include 100 kitchen sets, 20 boxes of soap, and five bales of sanitary pads.
Mwaura noted that the Nyeri County Commissioner will collect the supplies from the local cereals and produce board depot and arrange for transportation to the school. He emphasized that distribution will be managed by agencies on the ground to ensure the aid reaches those in need effectively.
He also mentioned that the Nyeri County government was the first to respond, providing two fire engines, counselors, and food. Additionally, the Office of the First Lady contributed a truckload of food. First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto expressed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
Mwaura further stated that health professionals are on-site to provide specialized care and assistance to the affected families. He highlighted that the Kenya Red Cross is coordinating support for parents and the school community, offering aid and counseling services.
“They have deployed 63 counselors, set up six tents for counseling, and provided eight vehicles to support the ongoing rescue efforts. Amani Counseling Center is also on the ground, offering additional counseling and psychosocial support to those impacted by the tragedy,” Mwaura added.
Mwaura provided this update on Saturday after visiting the school alongside Ministry of Education officials, including CS Julius Ogamba and Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang. He stated that the cause of the fire remains unknown but assured Kenyans that the government has mobilized all relevant agencies and is working diligently to conduct thorough investigations.
“Those found responsible will be brought to justice. The government is committed to ensuring accountability for every learner. Ensuring the safety of learners remains a top priority for the government. We will continue to follow through to ensure that the relevant policies are strictly adhered to,” Mwaura emphasized.
He extended his condolences to the families and friends of the victims and those who suffered physical and psychological trauma.
“It is truly devastating for the nation to lose such a number of young and promising Kenyans. Our hearts are heavy; our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families during this tragic moment,” he expressed.
Mwaura also thanked Kenyans who stepped forward to support the affected children during this difficult time, including the school community and neighboring residents.
