Residents of Loiyangalani are facing fear and uncertainty as rising water levels in Lake Turkana continue to escalate.
Alex Lemotou, the head teacher of Layoni Primary School, reported that the increased water levels have disrupted school activities and raised concerns about student safety.
The high water levels are threatening the school premises and surrounding areas, with some classrooms submerged in floodwaters. Andrew Galgidhele, Chief Education Officer of Loiyangalani Sub-County, noted that El Molo Bay Primary School is among the affected institutions, with flooded classrooms causing students to miss classes.
Other schools, including El Molo Bay Primary School and Layoni Primary School, are also experiencing similar issues.
The flooding has impacted local villages such as Komote and Layen, forcing some residents to abandon their homes and move to higher ground for safety.
Loiyangalani Police Commander Nicholas Mutua has warned that without prompt emergency measures, transportation could be severely disrupted due to the rising water levels. He also advised drivers to exercise caution when navigating the area.
