Content creator Lydia Wanjiru has said that online friendships can be just as risky as online relationships.

In a post on Instagram on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, she explained that the embarrassment of falling out is equal, and that people need to be careful about what they share online. She added that even adults should respect each other’s secrets and avoid revealing information that is private or sensitive.

She said online interactions often feel casual, but mistakes can have serious consequences.

“Another day to remind you that even online friendships are as dangerous as online relationships,” she explained.

She advised that people should only address what is already in public knowledge and avoid sharing private matters.

“But honestly, we are adults, please keep each other’s secrets. Address what’s already in public knowledge but not secrets,” she said.

The importance of discretion online

Wanjiru added that sharing too much online can also implicate the person posting the information. She explained that even small details, when made public, can cause unnecessary problems.

“As you share, be careful, you can implicate yourself too,” she said.

She said respecting boundaries and private information is a sign of maturity.

“Anywho, me of all the people, what do I know,” she explained, showing that even she is mindful of the challenges online friendships present.

She explained that awareness and discretion are key to avoiding conflicts and misunderstandings online.
