Lydia Wanjiru: Why I no longer dream of marriage and kids

Content creator Lydia Wanjiru says she no longer dreams of having children after opening up about how her views on marriage and family have changed with time.

She shared that growing up, she imagined a future that included marriage and children, but life experiences shifted that dream completely.

She said her early desire for a family was shaped by her childhood, where she grew up without what she described as a complete family. Because of that background, she explained that she wanted to compensate by creating a family of her own.

“Growing up, I used to dream of marriage and kids. This was majorly influenced by my childhood background where I grew up without a “complete” family. So I wanted to compensate for that by having one,” Lydia wrote on Wednesday, January 21, 2026.

Lydia said those dreams slowly changed as she grew older. She explained that dating taught her lessons she did not expect and made her see relationships differently. Responsibility also played a big role in changing how she viewed marriage and children.

According to her, the realities of adulthood showed her that some dreams, while beautiful, come with limits that are not always talked about openly. She explained that these lessons reshaped her priorities.

Choosing freedom over expectations

Lydia said her dream life now is centred on freedom. She explained that this freedom is not just physical, but also mental and emotional. She said she wants freedom in her thoughts, her speech, her lifestyle, and in simply being herself.

“My dream life now is about freedom, in thoughts, in speech, in lifestyle, in being,” she said.

She added that while marriage and children can be beautiful, they come with responsibilities that may limit personal freedom. Lydia said that at this stage of her life, she is choosing herself fully and without apology.

“I choose all of me. 100%,” she said, stressing that her happiness now comes from living life on her own terms. She explained that this choice has brought her peace and clarity about what she truly wants.

She explained that this decision was not rushed, but came after deep reflection and personal growth. According to her, it is a choice that aligns with who she is today.

Lydia explained that she is happy with the idea of being a rich auntie and enjoying life without the pressures of traditional expectations.
