The suspects arrived at the Mombasa Law Court for a hearing of the case, in which they were charged with 238 counts of manslaughter.

They were too weak to get out of the prison vehicles.

They were also left at the court basement, after it emerged they were too weak to walk into the courtroom.

No reason is yet to be given for their decision to stage a hunger strike.

Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku visited the suspects in the basement and assured them of justice.

The court is today hearing an application by the State to oppose the release of the suspects on bond terms.

The State has opposed their release on accounts that the suspects are at flight risk and have no fixed abode and might interfere with witnesses.
