Former CS Magoha returns to academia, where he had a thriving career before joining government
Months after leaving the Cabinet, former Cabinet Secretary for Education George Magoha has found a new job.
Prof. Magoha has accepted a position at Maseno University as a professor of surgery at the institution’s medical school.
This news was confirmed by Maseno University’s Director of Public Relations, Dr. Owen McOnyango.
“He (Magoha) is an asset to us because of his vast experience and strong professional background. Our medical school is relatively new, and getting an experienced and strong individual like Magoha is definitely a plus for us,” Dr. McOnyango told the press.
Before joining the government, the former CS had a thriving career in the world of academics.
After his high school education in Kenya, Magoha studied medicine at the University of Lagos in Nigeria.
He furthered his studies in surgery and urology at Lagos University Teaching Hospital, University College Hospital in Ibadan, the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland, and the Royal Postgraduate Medical School Hammersmith Hospital in London, Department of Urology, where he received several academic awards.
He trained in business administration at Stanford University, Graduate School of Business, and received numerous international honors and awards.
Locally, he received the Moran of the Burning Spear (MBS) and Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) awards, among others.
Prof. Magoha began his career in surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital as a resident and rose to the position of Senior Resident and Clinical Lecturer in Surgery.
He also served as a Lecturer at the same hospital and as a Consultant Surgeon at various leading hospitals in Lagos, Nigeria.
Prof. Magoha joined the University of Nairobi in 1988 as a Lecturer in Urological Surgery and rose to full Professor of Surgery by 2000.
He held various administrative positions at the university, from chairman of the academic department of surgery in 1999 to dean of the faculty of medicine, head of the College of Health Sciences, and associate vice chancellor for administration and finance to vice chancellor in January 2005.
In 2016, he was appointed Chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council by then President Uhuru Kenyatta.
On March 1, 2019, he was appointed Cabinet Secretary for Education and sworn in on March 26, 2019. He succeeded Amina Mohamed, who was transferred to the Ministry of Sports.
