National Super League side Mara Sugar FC made history on Saturday by qualifying for the Kenyan Premier League for the first time. They achieved this milestone with a decisive 4-0 victory over Silibwet Leons at Awendo Green Stadium in Migori.
Their promotion has been a long time coming. Throughout the 2023-24 season, Mara Sugar FC has been one of the standout teams, winning 24 of their 35 matches, drawing 6, and losing 5, accumulating a total of 78 points. With three matches remaining in this season’s National Super League campaign, the team’s technical director, Boniface Ambani, expressed his immense joy at their success.
“This [team] begun as corporate social responsibility and now see, we’re in the KPL. For us there is no celebration, we are still fighting for the title and that is where the focus is,” Ambani said, in reference to the fight for the gong where they are facing a strong challenge from Mathare United, second on the log on 74 points.
Mara becomes the first team from Masailand to grace the KPL.
