A man believed to be behind a string of brutal murders in Gem Yala sub-county in Siaya was apprehended and later lynched by members of the public.
Charles Onyango alias “Kwa,” was arrested in Kibos area within Kisumu County following a tip-off from vigilant members of the public.
The 40-year-old had reportedly sought work as a herdsman in the area, attempting to blend in after evading police for nearly two months.
Gem Yala Sub-County Police Commander, Charles Wafula, confirmed the arrest, stating that officers from Yala, working in coordination with their Kisumu counterparts, tracked down the suspect and apprehended him on Wednesday night.
Onyango is suspected of orchestrating a series of killings that primarily targeted women and schoolgirls across Gem Yala and his arrest brings a sense of relief to a community that has lived in fear for months.
He was then taken Yala Police Station but on Thursday morning, irate public members demanded his handover, a request that was honored by the police.
Members of the public then lynched him and his body was left burning at the Yala boda boda stage,
