Police in Eldoret have commenced probe into the death of a 24-year-old remandee who was facing alleged charge of breaking into his mother’s bar and stealing beer in Eldoret.

According to Turbo Sub County police commander Patrick Wekesa, the suspect, identified as Collins Cheruiyot killed himself after his attempt to convince his mother to withdraw the case against him was futile.

Wekesa said that the slain suspect hanged himself in the holding cell after making a futile call to his mother as he pleaded with her to come and secure his release.

The deceased is said to have asked for forgiveness from his mother and pleaded with her to come to court so as to settle the matter but she instead turned down the offer.

Cheruiyot first took the plea on May 27, 2024, where he pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing before changing his plea to not guilty.

Since then his case has been undergoing several adjournments as he has been pleading with the court to wait for his mother to come and withdraw the case.

On Wednesday he appeared before Eldoret Senior Resident Magistrate Kimani Mukabi who directed the matter to be mentioned on March 27, 2025 for further directions.

The charge sheet stated that, on May 24,2024 at Burnt Forest Trading Centre in Ainabkoi Sub County, Uasin Gishu County, he broke and entered into Round Point Bar with intent to steal from the said bar.

Turbo Sub County police boss said efforts by court orderlies and other inmates to rescue him were futile as he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), Eldoret where he was rushed for treatment.

The body has been transferred to MTRH morgue as police embark on investigation to ascertain the real cause of the incident.
