A middle-aged man has died after being run over by a truck ferrying sugarcane as he attempted to pull a stick of cane from the speeding vehicle along Kachok- Kondele bypass.
Nyanza Regional traffic boss Joseph Ng’ang’a confirmed the Tuesday afternoon incident saying the man was run over and died on the spot.
Ng’ang’a said the deceased was dragged by force from the trailer and the rear tyres crushed him to death.
Incidents of pulling cane from trucks ferrying sugarcane are common in the lakeside city with a majority often lining up along the highway to pull cane for chewing.
Ng’ang’a says the truck which was destined for the Kabras sugar industry in Western Kenya was taken to Kondele police station for inspection.
The truck driver escaped unhurt while the body of the deceased was taken to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital JOOTRH morgue.
