Police in the city have launched investigations into an incident where a man was found dead inside a lodge in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

The body of the man identified as Mr Christopher Otieno, who works for a bus company, was found in a room he had booked on Tuesday morning, April 22, 2024.

“He booked a room and went to sleep but never woke up. Workers in the accommodation were then forced to break into the room where his body was found,” a police report said.

The room was broken into because he did not answer phone calls and did not open the door when workers tried to knock.

His colleagues had also gone to check on him as he was unresponsive.

The man had complained of chest pains, yet he was expected to wake up the next morning and travel to Mombasa for work.

The room was broken into in the presence of the police, who then took him to the City Mortuary.

His family had already been informed of the incident by the company he worked for.

In the Ndwaru area, police are investigating the death of a man who committed suicide.

Joseph Mbatia’s body was found dangling in his house a day after he was seen entering it. It remains unclear why he decided to end his life as he left no suicide note.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise in recent times, affecting most families and leaving them devastated.

According to the best available data, Kenya ranks 27th out of 46 countries in sub-Saharan Africa in terms of suicide rate per 100,000 people.

However, data quality is a major concern, as the country does not maintain a suicide registry, which is useful for identifying risk factors and developing strategies to reduce suicide. Stigma is also a serious problem.
