Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has announced his retirement from international football. The 2014 World Cup winner earned 124 caps for his country, with his final appearance coming last month in the Euro 2024 quarter-final loss to Spain.

Neuer, 38, made his international debut in 2009 and participated in eight major tournaments. He played a key role in Germany’s World Cup victory over Argentina in 2014 and was named captain ahead of the 2018 World Cup, a position he held until Ilkay Gundogan succeeded him earlier this year.

This week, Gundogan also announced his retirement from international duty, following in the footsteps of midfielder Toni Kroos, who ended his career after Germany’s home Euros.

Despite retiring from international football, Neuer will continue playing for Bayern Munich after signing a contract extension last year that keeps him at the club until 2025.
