Police officers have detained a man who reportedly killed his mother, accusing her of bewitching his wife who had a stillbirth.
Benon Tumwesigye reportedly split up with his then-pregnant wife, who later returned to Rwanda. He then accused his mother of witchcraft after his wife had a stillbirth on Sunday.
They live in the border village of Hakabungo, Mukarangye ward of Katuna town council in Uganda.
According to a Kigezi region Police spokesman, the suspect hit his mother, Provia Busingye, 50, on the head with a hoe on Tuesday as she was preparing to travel to Rwanda to attend the burial of her grandson.
“After notification, detectives at Katuna police station rushed to the scene of crime where the suspected killer was arrested, two blood-stained hoes were recovered as exhibits before taking the body of the deceased to Kabale regional referral hospital mortuary for postmortem,” Maate told the Monitor.
“It’s alleged that the suspect started accusing his own mother of bewitching his estranged wife and that it’s the reason she gave birth to a dead child.”
Tumwesigye will remain in police custody pending arraignment while further investigations are conducted.
