Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca believes his team can take valuable lessons from their 4-2 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, October 14, 2026.
The loss handed City their first defeat of the season after a thrilling encounter in which the reigning European champions exposed defensive weaknesses before holding off a spirited fightback from the hosts.
City endured a disastrous opening 45 minutes, with Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha finding the back of the net to give PSG a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time.
However, Maresca’s men returned from the break with renewed determination and mounted an impressive comeback attempt.
Erling Haaland struck twice to give City hope, while the Norwegian also reached a significant personal milestone by becoming the club’s leading scorer in Champions League history with 38 goals in 41 appearances.

The hosts came close to reducing the deficit further, hitting the woodwork on three occasions, but their efforts were ultimately insufficient as Maghnes Akliouche scored PSG’s fourth goal to put the result beyond their reach.
Despite the disappointment, Maresca remains convinced that the performance offers important lessons for his players as they look to improve in future European encounters.
Maresca’s reaction
“From tonight’s game, we can learn many things,” the City boss reflected.
The Italian acknowledged that conceding goals in quick succession against a team of PSG’s quality made the challenge significantly more difficult, particularly after his side lost its organisation during the first half.
“Even if we concede two goals against the best team in Europe, we need to do the right things.
“I continue to learn from the players because I just arrived three months ago.
“We concede the first goal and then after one minute, concede the second one against this kind of team it’s already difficult when you are at 0-0.
“In two minutes you concede two goals and we lost a bit of balance, distance between players.
“We struggled but then in the second half we made changes, adjusted something and we were much better.”

Maresca also admitted that facing PSG presents a tactical challenge he enjoys, praising the French side’s aggressive pressing and ability to move the ball quickly.
Playing PSG
“I really like to play against PSG to be honest.
“They are brave, I know the way they want to press.
“On the ball they are dynamic. I like to play against them.
“We are there; my feeling is we are close. In the first half, we struggled because we conceded two goals and inside the pitch you think ‘Oh my god.’
“Luis [Enrique] at the end told me they had been quite lucky.
“We lost, [but] we can learn from that and move on.”
The defeat leaves City with defensive issues to address, particularly their inability to recover their shape after PSG’s early strikes. Nevertheless, the second-half response provided encouragement that Maresca’s tactical adjustments can help the team compete against Europe’s strongest sides.
City will now be expected to turn the disappointment into a learning opportunity as they seek to maintain their ambitions in the Champions League campaign.
