Maseno University Student shot dead during Azimio protest

A third-year student at Maseno University was shot dead by police officers as protests against the high cost of living turned ugly in Maseno.

The student identified as William Mayange was part of a group of students who had joined the protests by Azimio.

According to a police report seen by K24 digital, the incident took place at around 5 p.m. when the students invaded Sairam supermarket and other business premises within the area.

In the police report, it was stated that the protestors lit bonfires and barricaded the Kisumu-Busia highway.

“After some time, the students started pelting stones at the police line where they damaged window panes in ten houses and the police station, “read part of the report.

The protesting students overpowered police officers who were manning the station after they had run out of teargas canisters and blanks.

Police claim six officers were injured in the process which prompted them to use live ammunition.

One of the rounds caught the third-year student on the neck. Fellow students rushed him to Coptic hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
