Maseno Univeristy students on Tuesday held protests over the killing of their colleague who was allegedly shot dead by police officers during the nationwide Azimio la Umoja protests on Monday.

In videos obtained by Citizen Digital, the students took to the streets chanting solidarity slogans but were shortly dispersed by police officers who controlled the situation.

William Mayange, a third-year student, was shot dead in Kisumu’s Maseno area during the protests.

Police say the students overpowered security officers, who had run out of teargas canisters and were forced to fire live bullets to disperse the crowds when Mayange was hit by a stray bullet.

Mayange was shot in the neck and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Coptic hospital where he had been rushed.

His friends, however, detail a different account, claiming that he was not among the demonstrators but he was caught up in the commotion as he left class at around 2 pm.

Another student, 22, is undergoing a gunshot wound treatment at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) following the protest.

The hospital’s administrator Alex Ochieng says the student was referred to the facility after being allegedly shot in the elbow by police.

Ochieng says the patient is set to undergo a surgical procedure to establish whether the bullet was lodged in his body.
