The AFC Leopards versus Gor Mahia Premier League match that was set for Sunday has been postponed to an unknown date, the Football Kenya Federation Leagues and Competitions Committee has confirmed.
This is due to lack of a venue safe for hosting a high-risk match, as both Nyayo National Stadium and Kasarani are closed for renovations ahead of CHAN 2025.
The biggest football derby in Kenya, christened Mashemeji derby, is viewed as high-risk due to the longstanding rivalry between the teams, sustained by their huge fanatical following since the 60s.
“We regret to inform you that the much anticipated FKF PL match – AFC Leopards SC vs Gor Mahia FC – #MashemejiDerby earlier scheduled to be played on Sunday, 24th November 2024, 1600 Hrs at Nyayo Stadium, Nairobi has been postponed to a later date.
“This is due to the unavailability of the match venue, which is undergoing renovations in preparation for the upcoming CHAN 2024 Competition. We shall communicate the rescheduled dates in due course,” posted Leopards on their official Twitter handle.
The derby was highly anticipated, albeit the poor form by the two sides, which has forced Gor to recently terminate coach Leo Neiva’s contract while Leopards’ Thomas Trucha is under immense pressure.
