Five employees of the county government have been charged with stealing medication from two public health clinics in Masinga Sub-County. Clinical officer Mathenge Ndungi and nurse Pauline Kiura appeared before the Kithimani court, accused of stealing medicines valued at KSh 14,676 from Kaewa Health Centre on April 27, 2024.
In a separate case at the same court, Mathenge Ndungi, nurse Benson Chuma, watchman Benson Mutinda, and cleaner John Wambua were charged with stealing medicines worth KSh 30,745 from Itunduimuni Dispensary in Masinga. The stolen items belonged to the Machakos County government.
All the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges before Principal Magistrate Paul Matanda. They were each released on a KSh 100,000 bond or an alternative cash bail of KSh 50,000. The case is scheduled for mention on September 4, 2024, with the hearing set for October 1, 2024.
The suspects were arrested on August 10, 2024, after the medicine store was found broken into and the drugs were reported stolen. The incident was recorded under police OB number 08/07/08/2024. During the investigation, police recovered some of the stolen medicines from one of the suspects.
