KCB head coach Robert Matano has expressed confidence in his squad ahead of the new Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) season, scheduled to kick off on September 20.
The veteran tactician spoke after guiding his side to a 2-1 pre-season victory over Tanzania Prisons, coached by former Gor Mahia boss Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno, at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium in Arusha.
Goals from Kelvin Etemesi and December Kisakah sealed the win for the Bankers in what Matano described as a positive test for his side
“This is the first game outside the country, and we have got new players in the team. They are bonding so well, and today’s match showed that the players are together,” he said.
The former Tusker tactician, who is in his first full pre-season with the club, noted that his charges were beginning to adapt to his style and philosophy.
“The players have gelled together as a team, and I think if we can continue that way, it will be good. It was a very tough match, but we did well, we were more technical, and above all, we played good football,” he added.
The Bankers have undergone significant changes in the transfer window. Harambee Stars utility man Mansur Okwaro departed for Nairobi United, while winger James Kinyanjui joined AFC Leopards.
In response, KCB bolstered their squad with several signings including Etemesi and Rowland Makati from Nairobi City Stars, Fortune Omotto from Kariobangi Sharks, Gideon Were from AFC Leopards, and experienced midfielder Humphrey Mieno from Sofapaka.
The new additions, coupled with Matano’s leadership, are expected to provide fresh energy to a side that stumbled last season.
KCB had a promising start, topping the table for several weeks, but eventually dropped to ninth place with 42 points.
With a reinforced squad and renewed belief, Matano is determined to spark a revival.
“I want to put our players together so they can gel, understand one another, and also what the management expects from us. This trip has helped us bond, and we appreciate the support to build a stronger unit,” he emphasized.
The Bankers will continue fine-tuning before their season opener, with hopes of mounting a stronger title challenge.
