Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi intends to engage officials from the ministry of education over school capitation crisis.
Mbadi on Monday said he will engage Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba to come up with a solution to the challenges that have bedeviled the education system.
Speaking in Nairobi during the Public Private Partnership Symposium, Mbadi said there is need for more resources to be availed to meet minimum requirements as per budgetary allocation policies for the education sector.
“You’ve heard discussions around capitation and how we are now reducing the cost of the school fees that is payable at the universities and colleges. And capitation, I have spoken about this, that we need to provide more resources to be able to meet the minimum requirement according to our policy,” said Mbadi.
Mbadi addressed the reduction of fees payable to colleges and universities that the Government, through the Ministry of Education had earlier announced will take effect from 1st September.
This was after students, parents and education experts raised concerns on the high cost of tuition payable for academic programmes in public universities and colleges.
Mbadi attracted criticism when he appeared before a Parliamentary committee in July, stating that the financial burden of free education is too heavy for the State to sustain.
According to Mbadi, the current financial muscle cannot meet the full cost per student — a reality he accuses some leaders of conveniently ignoring.
Mbadi would later said his comments in parliament were taken out of context.
