Weeks after assuming the role of Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, John Mbadi is set to lead the budget preparation process for the 2025/2026 financial year.
Mbadi will officially launch the process today at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi. The event will be attended by MP Ndindi Nyoro, Chairman of the Budget and Appropriations Committee, and Chris Kiptoo, the Principal Secretary of the National Treasury.
Last month, Mbadi outlined measures he plans to implement to improve the country’s economic outlook, including a thorough overhaul of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to enhance tax collection.
However, he faces significant challenges in revitalizing Kenya’s economy, addressing debt levels, and generating new revenue streams amidst declining revenues. These efforts are crucial for the Kenya Kwanza administration to achieve its development goals.
Mbadi’s role in the budget-making process comes at a time of heightened socio-economic pressures, including rising expenditures, mounting debt obligations, and slow job creation for the country’s youth.
