Inter Miami manager, Javier Mascherano, has named Lionel Messi as the greatest footballer in history ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi and Ronaldo have taken the GOAT (greatest of all time) debate to a whole new level.

The Argentine forward currently plays for Inter Miami in the MLS, while Ronaldo plays for Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.

The pair are in the twilight of their football careers and their rivalry has shown no signs of slowing down.

Speaking at a recent press conference, as cited by ESPN, Mascherano was asked who is the better footballer between Messi and Ronaldo.

The former Liverpool midfielder said: “You don’t need to ask. I think Messi is the greatest player in history.

“[There will] never be [a player] like him. It is impossible. 20 years at the top scoring, playing.

“Also if you put him in defence, he will be the best defender, I can assure you. And I have seen that.

“So in the end, for me, I don’t have any doubt,” Mascherano further stated.
