Twenty six people who were arrested during the anti-government protests last week were on Monday arraigned at Rongo Magistrate Court in Migori County.

The suspects who were charged with various offenses including obstruction, participating in an illegal protest and also destroying properties appeared before magistrate Chrisphine Orucho, where they pleaded not guilty.

The suspects’ lawyer Antony Oyoo said four of the suspects are students and one person with mental illness. The five were set free without bond after court granted his plea.

The other 21 suspects were released on a cash bail of Ksh.10, 000 each pending hearing slated for the month of September.

The lawyer said they will be able to assess the progress of the cases based on the evidence that will be submitted before the court by the complainants.

On July 20, eight people arrested during the anti-government demonstrations were also charged with the offense of participating in illegal demonstrations and destruction of public properties.

They were released on a cash bail of Ksh.50, 000 and alternative bond of Ksh.200,000.
