Residents in Awendo, Migori County, have expressed concerns over the increasing number of road accidents involving cane tractors, they urged the relevant authorities to address the issue urgently.
“We have seen a rise in accidents in this area, primarily due to cane tractors operating at night,” one resident reported.
These concerns were raised just two days after a rider was killed in an accident involving a stationary cane tractor along the Awendo-Mariwa road.
Led by former councilor Martin Ondong, locals stated that the tractors have become a significant hazard, particularly for bodaboda riders.
“Some of the tractors operating at night lack headlights, and their drivers do not wear reflector jackets,” Ondong explained.
Residents also pointed out that when these tractors develop mechanical issues, they are often parked carelessly, posing additional risks to road users.
“This increases the danger of road accidents,” they noted.
Ondong mentioned that the government had previously mandated that cane tractors cease operations by sunset.
“According to that directive, the tractors were to resume operations at 6 am. However, this regulation has not been followed,” residents complained.
