Residents of Rukanga village along the Makutano–Sagana Highway in Kirinyaga County had a field day on Monday night, when a milk tanker overturned, spilling its cargo onto the road.

The incident, which occurred at around 8:30 p.m., turned into a blessing in disguise for villagers, who flocked to the scene with jerricans and containers to collect the milk.

According to eyewitnesses, the tanker was heading to Nairobi from Sagana when it overturned, prompting a swift response from residents eager to capitalize on the unexpected windfall.

“It was like God had brought manna to our village,” said Mwangi, a local resident who was among the first to collect the milk.

The crash happened as most residents were settling in for the night, but the sound drew them quickly to the scene.

While the tanker driver escaped unhurt, another driver who had reportedly stopped to assist was injured and taken to Sagana Sub-County Hospital for treatment. He told locals he had been flagged down for help, as there were no matatus in sight at the time.

As news of the spill spread, more residents from surrounding areas converged on the scene, eager to collect as much milk as possible.

“We couldn’t just stand there and watch the milk go to waste,” said Peter Kamau. “We came with jerricans and started collecting it. Some of us will now buy maize flour since we already have milk.”

Police officers arrived promptly but struggled to control the excited crowd, who were determined to get their share. Order was only restored after the overturned vehicle was towed to Sagana Police Station.

For the residents of Rukanga, the incident turned into an unexpected windfall.

“Who needs a lottery win when you can get free milk?” one resident quipped.

Geoffrey Mugambo noted that the incident serves as a reminder that unexpected events can sometimes bring surprising blessings — and a lot of joy, a sentiment echoed by Susan Wanjiru.
