A family in Mlolongo, Machakos County, was left shaken after a stray bullet allegedly fired by police to control protesters during the Wednesday, June 25, demonstrations tore through their ceiling,
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Serede Jami explained how the events unfolded while highlighting how often police overlook the danger of live rounds discharged into the air.
“We just had lunch and it was probably at around 2:00 pm and I was just chilling on my phone and my wife was next to me. My daughter was at the desk and suddenly we heard a loud bang and saw a hole in the ceiling,” he stated.
According to Jami, the bullet tore through the ceiling, hit the floor and ricocheted to the door. Amid the confusion, he managed to trace the bullet.
“Probably the police were shooting up in the air as the protests were happening two kilometres away from my house,” he added.
Jami, however, confirmed that his family was unharmed and is safe. He also raised concerns that no Kenyan should have to feel unsafe in their own house.
The incident occurred amid the June 25th protests that were held to commemorate the first anniversary of the anti-Finance Bill 2024 demonstrations.
The day was marked by confrontations between protesters and police, with bonfires lit along roads, officers lobbying teargas and several properties being destroyed amid the unrest.
