Mombasa will host an intensive swimming training camp next month to prepare swimmers thoroughly for the upcoming Kenya Aquatics Junior Championship. Chairperson of Mombasa Aquatics and camp director, Heize Kahindo, announced that the camp, supervised by renowned coach Abdulmalik Abdulkarim, will take place from August 13-18.
Kahindo assured that all necessary arrangements have been made, and the coaching staff is fully prepared to cater to swimmers of various skill levels. Stressing the camp’s inclusivity and strategic timing, Kahindo stated, “We welcome all swimmers looking to enhance their techniques at the camp.”
Parents have been urged to register their children promptly to facilitate effective planning, with a registration deadline also emphasized.
“Early registration is necessary because it will enable the technical team to categorise swimmers according to their level and age and this will assist in generating workouts. There will also be aspects of dryland training, nutrition and the general conduct of a swimmer,” Kahindo stated.
Uasin Gishu Aquatics chairperson and Torpedo Swimming Club head coach, Hillary Leboy, stressed the importance of adopting a systematic approach to training camps to elevate the standards of the sport in Kenya.
” The country has to adopt a system of camps if we have to improve our swimming standards.
“We need to take advantage of school holidays and ensure we have regional high-performance training camps through collaboration amongst stakeholders of clubs and counties.
“South Africa has adopted structures of camps and they are one of the best swimming countries in Africa,” he explained.
He added: “We also need to give our coaches exposure to high-performance training and to many coaching clinics for them to improve their capacity,” Leboy remarked.
