Nairobi County Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria has once again reiterated his bid to restore Nairobi’s lost glory when it comes to cleanliness and order.
Through a Facebook post on Friday, November 7, 2025, Mosiria warned that his office would take firm action against illegal recycling facilities operating in residential areas, saying they have become a danger to public health.
He said that while the county encourages entrepreneurship, no one should operate in a manner that endangers others.

Mosiria shares a warning
“Hatukatai watu kufanya kazi, lakini mbona ufunge njia na kuwaumiza majirani? Please, just do the right thing so nobody will bother you.
“Do it from the right place, away from residential areas if it’s harmful,” Mosiria wrote.
He also attached a video of himself confronting a group of young men and women holding sacks at one of the illegal sites.
The scene showed heaps of plastic bottles and waste materials piled along a narrow estate road, blocking movement and spreading foul smells.
Mosiria stated that the county would not sit back and watch residents suffer due to environmental negligence.
He said his office is already mapping out areas where recycling and waste-handling facilities have been built illegally within estates and vowed to close them down immediately.

“We shall be taking action against illegal recycling facilities in residential areas that have become health hazards to the people of Nairobi.
Ensure that your facilities are environmentally compliant. This city is for all of us, and we must protect the well-being and peace of our residents,” he said.
He urged all business owners whose operations emit smoke, noise, foul smells, or any form of pollution to relocate to designated industrial zones.
Protecting Nairobi’s environment
Mosiria emphasised that the administration under Governor Johnson Sakaja is focused on maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy city.

He said the war on pollution and illegal dumping would continue until Nairobi regains its image as the “Green City in the Sun.”
“Let us work together to create a clean, safe, and healthy Nairobi for everyone,” he concluded.
The video has since attracted wide attention online, with many Nairobians praising the county’s efforts, while others called for stricter penalties against repeat offenders who continue to flout environmental laws.
