Kisii county Member of Parliament (MP), Dorice Donya Aburi has appealed to the government to include anti-Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) lessons in the schools’ curriculums to fight the vice.
Speaking after she distributed foodstuff and clothes donated by well-wishers to residents under Donya Charity Mission (DCM) programme at Kiobegi dispensary in Kisii county, the lawmaker noted that learners are likely to battle the retrogressive cultural practice if they are taught of its dangers at a tender age.
Donya, accompanied by area Ward Representative, Michael Motume and other MCAs- Steve Arika ( Ibeno) Ward, Jacob Bagaka ( Masige West) Beatrice Kerubo ( Bombaba Borabu) and Damaris Nyanchoka ( nominated) challenged parents and guardians to shun subjecting the girl child to the practice.
“We want Female Genital Mutilation included in the curriculums to empower the children with knowledge and skills to fight it,” Donya said.
Additionally, she stated that female MPs met President William Ruto at State House and assured them the government will procure sanitary pads for the leaders to distribute to school girls.
“My mandate is to empower women, youth groups and people living with disabilities economically and provide water. The charity work brings me closer to people and hear their grievances,” Donya noted.
The members of the assembly lauded the charity initiative, stressing that they will support the MP to reach out to many residents to ease their suffering.
Kerubo, who is the chairperson of Water, Energy, Environment and natural resources said she will spearhead a campaign to ensure residents have access to clean water.
