Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has proudly announced the successful implementation of the school feeding program in her constituency. The initiative is now fully operational across 48 public primary schools, providing daily meals to approximately 20,000 students and marking a significant advancement in educational support for the region.
Wamuchomba described the program as a major achievement for the community, emphasizing its role in addressing one of the critical barriers to education—hunger. “By ensuring that our students receive a nutritious meal each day, we are making a significant impact,” she said.
The initiative aims not only to combat food insecurity but also to improve student retention, boost enrollment rates, and enhance academic performance. Additionally, the program has positively impacted local employment by creating over 300 new jobs, primarily for young people under 30. These positions are centered around food preparation and distribution, offering valuable work opportunities to the youth in the community.
A central kitchen, funded and constructed by the National Government Constituency Development Fund, Githunguri, plays a crucial role in the program. It ensures that meals are prepared in a centralized location and distributed to the schools by 11 a.m. daily. Wamuchomba highlighted that the efficient operation of the central kitchen is essential for the program’s continued success.
“The timely preparation and distribution of meals ensure that all participating schools receive their food on schedule, which is vital for the smooth running of the program,” she explained.
long-term positive effects on the educational system in Githunguri.
“We are already seeing improvements in student attendance and engagement. This is a clear sign that the program is making a difference,” Wamuchomba stated.
Looking to the future, Wamuchomba expressed a strong commitment to expanding the program.
“Our next step is to extend the feeding initiative to all-day secondary schools in the constituency. This expansion will provide additional support to older students and further enhance their educational experience,” she said
Wamuchomba concluded with a note of optimism about the program’s impact.
“Githunguri will never be the same again,” she said.
“The successful rollout of the program represents a significant investment in the future of Githunguri’s students, addressing both educational and economic needs in the community.”
