A group of MPs from the Rift Valley has expressed their appreciation for President William Ruto’s hands-off approach in the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, the lawmakers highlighted that Ruto’s decision to let the process unfold without interference demonstrates his commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.

“As MPs, we want to thank the president for not interfering with it in any way,” Melly stated. “He has said that the law should follow its course to the end and justice served.”

Speaking in Nandi, Melly emphasized that Ruto’s non-interference sends a powerful message about accountability and respect for constitutional processes. He defended the actions of the MPs, asserting that the impeachment of a leader is constitutionally permitted. “There is nothing wrong that we have done. Anyone can be impeached. The motion came and we exercised our mandate,” he asserted.

Melly also underscored the importance of fostering a united country free from regional politics. “Anyone preaching divisive politics should be condemned,” he said. Aldai MP Maryanne Kitany echoed this sentiment, advocating for a united Kenya. “Let us not be talking about mountain politics all the time. We want a country that is united,” she stated.

Last Tuesday, a record 282 MPs from both the ruling coalition and the opposition voted to impeach Gachagua. The matter is currently under consideration by the Senate, with discussions scheduled for next Wednesday and Thursday. Gachagua is set to appear during the trial process to defend himself.
