Members of Parliament are set to resume their normal sittings today after a month-long recess. They had approved a motion on August 7 to adjust their House calendar, leading to the start of their recess on August 16.

The MPs will reconvene for the Third Part of the Third Session before taking a break for the long December holiday. Key items on today’s agenda include:

– Reports from various committees, including the National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity Committee’s audit on employment diversity in public institutions, and the Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives’ review of alleged unfair trade practices by foreign investors in Kenya.
– Consideration of Public Petition No. 4 of 2022 regarding expenditures by the National Government that contravene Article 223 of the Constitution, as well as consolidated fund services for the supplementary estimates I for FY 2024/2025.
– The Equalisation Fund (Administration) Bill from the Senate, which is scheduled for its second reading.

On Wednesday, MPs will consider the report from the joint committee of the National Assembly’s Administration and Internal Security and the Senate’s Internal Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations on the nomination of Douglas Kanja as the next Inspector General of Police. The Senate has already approved Kanja’s appointment, making this the final stage in the process.

Kanja is set to succeed Japhet Koome, who resigned on July 12. Gilbert Masengeli, the Acting Inspector General in charge of Administration Police, has been serving in an acting capacity since then.
