Social media influencer Carol Muthoni, popularly known as Sonie has shared a deeply personal account of how social media bullying nearly pushed her to the brink of mental collapse.
In an interview with Oga Obinna, Sonie, the mother of one and former partner of comedian Mulamwah, opened up about the harrowing aftermath of their public breakup two years ago.
Sonie revealed that she was particularly vulnerable during this period, having just given birth.
The relentless online harassment and negative comments overwhelmed her, leading her to a point where she almost lost her sanity.
“I took a break and went through therapy. I had to undergo treatment because I was losing it. The counseling helped me understand and realize why I was going through what I was experiencing. That’s why I took a break,” Sonie shared.
The healing process, she said, was made possible by comedian Nasra Yusuf, who stepped in during Sonie’s darkest hour.
“Nasra was the one who helped me. I was going crazy; I would wake up to find myself trending and not knowing what I had done,” she explained.
Sonie added:
“All of that affected me mentally, and I didn’t know where or whom to turn to. I’m grateful to Nasra; she helped me, she paid for my therapy, and I went for three months. She would wake me up every morning to go for therapy,” Sonie recounted.
The mother of one said the online abuse did not just affect Sonie; it also took a toll on her family.
“My depression was due to online harassment and humiliation. It got into my head and severely affected my mental health,” she explained.
Before seeking therapy, Sonie admitted she didn’t know how to deal with the online hate and negativity.
However, therapy has since equipped her with the tools to manage it better.
“Now, I take everything positively, whether good or bad. What you comment or say about me doesn’t matter,” she concluded.
Sonnie and comedian Mulamwah are currently peacefully co-parenting.
